Darnestown, MD – Pergola with Outdoor Kitchen, Custom Masonry & Colorful Gardens

Project Description

The success of our Darnestown, MD landscape architecture project was the result of a great client, visionary design, precise craftsmanship, and team work. A year after completing the installation of the backyard landscape plan, our client wanted to add an outdoor kitchen design off the side of the swimming pool. This proved difficult due to the slope of the backyard; the pool was designed into the grade eight steps below the main dining patio. Our landscape design team was able to overcome these challenges, creating a landscape our clients love.

Outdoor Kitchen Design

When we started the project, a small pergola served as a sitting area, but it was too small for larger crowds. We explored several design ideas for the space and decided to replace the existing pergola with an outdoor kitchen design and a cozy outdoor living room area.

The outdoor kitchen design includes the finest details and materials, including:

  • A stainless steel 41 in. grill
  • An oversized under-mount sink
  • Exotic granite countertops
  • A stone wall
  • A hot water heater
  • An ice maker
  • A refrigerator
  • Plenty of storage drawers

A 4 in. bar counter with a radius table end faces the pool and provides the perfect place to grab a cold drink.

Outdoor Living Room

On the other side of the outdoor kitchen design, we included a relaxing living room space with a wood burning fireplace. Our client wanted to avoid starting the fire with guests around, so we installed a gas igniter. A custom retractable shade canopy runs under the arbor joists and provides shade.

The existing River Birch trees were transplanted to anchor the sides of the structure and specimen three Foster Holly trees were installed as a backdrop to the outdoor kitchen design and outdoor living room area. Perennials, grasses, and annuals provide seasonal interest.

The outdoor living room also has the following features:

  • A complete sound system
  • Ceiling fans
  • A chandelier
  • Down lighting
  • Rope lighting hidden in the crown molding

Project Challenges

Coordinating Subcontractors & Utilities

Reconfiguring the existing plan was no easy task. Existing utilities including a septic line, fiber optic cable for the pool, multiple irrigation lines, and lighting wires ran throughout the landscape. New plumbing, electrical, and gas lines were required.

It became obvious that coordinating all the subcontractors would be vital to the project’s success. A pre-construction site meeting was held to review every detail and make certain that everyone was working together. At one point during the project there were five different contractors working within the 30 x 16 ft. space.

Before construction could begin, the existing landscape needed to be transplanted and staged. Exact precision was needed with the stone work to ensure that the appliances fit perfectly and that the electrical hook ups were aligned.

Shady Canopy

Another challenge involved installing the shade canopy. The fabric was available in two widths; exact measurements were needed to layout the arbor joists so that the ceiling fans, chandelier, and overhead lights could fit between the track systems.

In the end, every detail was carefully thought through to produce a truly magnificent outdoor living space. After the project was completed, we decided to celebrate overcoming the challenges by hosting a garden party for 75 of our client’s guests. Seeing firsthand how people interacted with our landscape design was a wonderful experience and reinforced the age old design adage “form follows function.”
