When our clients in Alexandria, VA contacted us to install a new backyard landscape design, the property had limited space and a disconnected design. The existing landscaping looked dull and the patio space was barely functional.
So we set out to replace some of the existing hardscaping with a new patio landscape design better suited for outdoor entertaining.
Now, you enter this backyard landscape design in Alexandria through a charming, white picket fence that adds definition and privacy. Then, take the long, sweeping walk to the new rear entry flanked by two beautiful custom planters that are flush with color. The entry to the guest house is just a few steps beyond this point. The walk brings you to the first of two side yards.
Initially, this portion of the backyard landscape design was very thin and lacked character. So we framed the long lawn area with cobble stone. Then, we used the center circle medallion to help center the eye to the reconstructed arbor and screened-in porch. All the railings and trim were replaced with composite materials custom manufactured in our mill.
On the opposite side of the yard, we converted the existing patio landscape design that sat too low, collected water, and had a nonfunctional fireplace into an extended outdoor entertaining area. This area now features an oversized dining patio, and a sitting and conversational patio with a fireplace as the centerpiece.
The sitting walls and grilling station hold back the grade in an understated fashion, keeping the patio landscape design protected while providing space for cooking and additional seating. This also allows guests to feel nestled into the garden while regaining critical space from the hillside.
This property has a very tight backyard and when we began the project, the main house, a guest house, and a garage each had a distinct look that didn't relate to each other.
The house also sits on a very busy road in Alexandria and has virtually no access from the front, so having the right backyard landscape design is necessary for day-to-day living, as well as formal entertaining.
To overcome these challenges, we remodeled the guest house, removed an over-sized two-story porch and added a bracketed entry cover to the door. We also removed the parking section from between the garage and the guest house to provide an additional 18' of depth to the rear yard and give us proper space to work with.
Lastly, we painted the brick on all three structures to bring continuity and a fresh, lighter look to the design. This resulted in a much more functional backyard space and stunning patio landscape design in this Alexandria neighborhood.
