Our clients in Potomac lived in their house for fifteen years without ever addressing the backyard landscape. They had a large pool that was completely bare and uninviting in full view of the house. There were no patios except the pool patio, which was a large amorphous shape with no “sense of place.”
After her children grew up and tuitions were paid, our client wanted to create an environment to entertain friends and family outside. She had traveled extensively for business, staying at some of the world’s finest resorts. Now she was ready to stay home and wanted to create a resort-like landscape where she could host her large extended family.
We began this Potomac landscaping project with a large pergola outside the family room and evolved it into a series of garden rooms with different purposes and levels of intimacy. These rooms create views from every important window and door, encouraging outdoor living.
There is also a sunny breakfast terrace off the kitchen for intimate dining. A few steps down, a large loggia provides shade. Here, you’ll find the landscape kitchen, a “living room,” and a large dining area. The cooling sounds of a fountain can be heard in each room. Through an archway in a tall brick wall, another short flight of steps leads to the “spa garden” with its own luxury patio. A large staircase links the luxury patio and landscape kitchen to the lower level family room with its pool room, home gym, and screening room.
Finally, we created a new custom pool design and luxury patio, giving our clients more intimate spaces to enjoy their landscape. Island beds directly adjacent to the water create the feeling of a natural pond and help define these spaces.
As a finishing touch, outdoor furniture was chosen as well. The dark brown resin wicker pieces tie the rooms together, providing flexibility in changing the rooms around for larger functions and adding that resort flavor that our clients sought for their Potomac landscape.

We agreed upon a June deadline so our clients could use their backyard oasis for a post wedding brunch and a houseful of guests. This necessitated winter work on a very wet site with heavy clay soil that seemed as if it would never dry out.
An extensive system of French drains, grate drains, and careful grading helped solve this problem. Much of the plant material needed to have perforated drain pipe installed beneath it to eliminate “wet feet.” In other places, the original plant palette was modified to favor wetland type shrubs.
The pool mechanicals were located in the basement of the house, which concerned our clients; they wanted them moved to an outside location closer to the pool. The filters and pumps were removed from the basement and the old lines were capped off. Although new lines were installed, poor soil made it necessary to protect the pipes by filling the trench with stone dust.
