Initially, the owners wanted to focus on creating a functional and private outdoor space for this Silver Spring landscaping project. They had a list of landscape elements that included:
Our primary goal with this Silver Spring landscaping project was to create an established feel to the home’s desolate setting and bring this enormous house into scale with the landscape. Our clients also stressed that they wanted to entertain both on the main level and basement levels of their home.
After discussing the clients’ needs and developing a detailed site analysis, it quickly became evident that the lower level was going to be the perfect escape from the full southern exposure. The next most important design factor is the picturesque view into the wooded valley in the southwest corner of the property.
With the general spaces defined, we set out to create functional and effortless flow throughout the property. A large entertainment deck and lower level lanai were developed as the hub of this Silver Spring landscaping design.
The 45 degree orientation of the entertainment deck captures the long views the site has to offer, making the property appear more spacious. The patio areas, walkways, lawn panel, and other amenities were developed around this feature. The patio areas are also nestled into the secluded side of the yard adjacent to the neighborhood’s forest conservation area.
The 6 ft. high heavy grade ornamental aluminum fencing makes a perfect backdrop to the planting plan that encompasses the entire property and includes over 40 different varieties of plants; a wide variety of colors and textures prevail in the space that was once so desolate. The landscape lighting is the finishing touch to this private and comfortable sanctuary. Our clients couldn’t be happier.
Despite the large scale of our clients home and the level of detail on the inside, the house looked very similar to surrounding homes on the outside; it needed its own personality. The topography magnifies the elevation of the house making it feel more like a high-rise building.
The builder left a grade off the driveway that had an 8 ft. fall over an 18 ft. distance; this slope was not traversable. The drainage swale of four neighboring properties came right through the yard and needed to be redirected to the rear property line without encroaching on the neighbor.
This meant that the planting and fencing had to be moved in 6 ft., making the small yard even smaller. As in so many cases in Maryland today, a large deer population needed to be deterred from eating the new landscape, precipitating the need for a six foot high fence.
In what seemed to be a yard too small for the house, we were challenged to create space where none existed. We made this happen by using a strong angle with long directing lines. These challenges are what made for such an impressive landscape.
