Customizing Your Pool Design

By Botanical Decorators
December 17, 2013

A swimming pool can serve as the focal point to a landscape design, transforming your property into a backyard retreat filled with stunning views and relaxing lounge areas. But in order to get the desired effect you’re looking for, you’ll likely want to customize your pool design to reflect your sense of style and blend in with the surrounding landscape.

Fortunately, we’ve come up with a pool design process that can help you plan your project. Keep reading to learn more or contact us to see how we can transform your property with a beautiful pool design in the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. area.

Swimming Pool Designs

The following steps can help you come up with pool designs that will bring your landscape to life:

  • Choose a pool shape. Consider whether you want an L-shape; oval shape; rectangular; round; or a more abstract, custom shape.
  • Choose pool technology. Think about whether you want automated features to help you control the operation of your pool remotely. This includes lighting, heaters, and covers, among other things. You may also want to consider using a smaller, more energy efficient heat pump.
  • Choose custom features. This is your chance to get creative and really bring out your personality and sense of style in the design.  Some custom features you might like include: an attached hot tub, waterfalls, jets, fountains, colored LED lights, or a vanishing edge. You can find more ideas for poolside water features here.
  • Choose landscape elements to complement the design.  Think about how you want to integrate your pool into your overall landscape design. Add a nearby fire pit, landscape plants, or an outdoor kitchen to make the space more functional and add to the aesthetic appeal.
  • Choose your decking. Your decking is essentially part of the overall pool design and should complement the pool itself. There are various materials to choose from such as poured concrete, pavers, stone, and decorative concrete, depending on your goals for style, maintenance, and budget. Add a lounge area, a dining area, or a grill station within the decking to make the most of this space and create places to relax or entertain guests.

For further inspiration, check out our Alexandria residence project, where we used a free-form shape to integrate the pool into the remaining landscape, and our Cabin John project, where we added a large swimming pool with an automatic cover.
