PROJECT SUMMARY: Residential Landscaping Bethesda, MD

An Urban Retreat on Oldchester Drive, Bethesda MD

The client originally contacted us to design & construct a screened porch. After reviewing the zoning ordinances, we determined that a screen porch could not be constructed. Feeling as if their dreams were dashed the client put the project on hold & considered selling their home. Realizing that the challenges they had were limiting the sale of their home they contacted us again & asked us to turn their backyard into an enjoyable outdoor space that would increase the home value. We accepted the challenge to transform the odd shaped 40’ x 40’ space into an outdoor living area. Their wish list- breakfast deck, grilling & dining areas & a large sitting area under a pergola with a fireplace & seat wall. They also asked that we come up with a creative solution for the courtyard area so that they could sit & watch the girls ride their bikes.

The courtyard design features a circular patio that becomes the entrance into the garden & a delightful sitting area. The bubbling urn  introduces the sound of water & makes a nice accent.  From here you can walk the path to a dining patio large enough to accommodate the table & grill. Turn the corner into the rear yard & face the stone fireplace- our main focal point. Upon entering the living area you realize that a lot can be accomplished within a small space. The pergola defines the room & reflects the custom architectural details found on the main residence, specifically the column details, picket hand rails & stone masonry.  The client requested that the project be as maintenance free as possible. We complied with a natural gas fireplace & an outdoor rated log set. Snuggle up and roast marshmallows with the kids.

This property is a great example of a very typical Bethesda/Chevy Chase urban lot. Our project shows off what some creative “out-of the box” thinking and fantastic craftsmanship can do to transform what appears to be a hopeless mud pit into a one of a kind urban oasis. In a small garden space, design details matter more than ever and this garden is no exception. The custom curved railings soften the ‘boxiness’ of the tight courtyard, the flame torched edges of the curved 2” PA Flagstone steps & fireplace mantle are all details that make this project uniquely personal.

This delightful transformation has given the owners a new outlook on their backyard space - one they plan to stick around and enjoy.
